ItinerariesDAY 1: THE BRIDGE AND THE BAY
Walk or cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge in the morning, ideally before midday when fog is statistically less likely to spoil the view back toward the city. In the afternoon, catch a ferry to Alcatraz — book ahead, demand stays high — and work through the historic prison tour. Wind down with dinner in North Beach, the city’s traditional Italian-American neighbourhood.
DAY 2: NEIGHBOURHOODS AND HILLS
Ride a cable car through Nob Hill in the morning, then walk over to the Painted Ladies near Alamo Square. In the afternoon, head to Haight-Ashbury for its countercultural roots and still-distinctive shopping streets. Save the evening for Twin Peaks — one of the best elevated views over the whole city and bay, especially at sunset.
DAY 3: DAY TRIP — NAPA VALLEY OR MUIR WOODS
For wine country, Napa Valley is about 1 to 1.5 hours away and easily fills a full day of vineyard visits. For nature, Muir Woods — home to genuine old-growth coastal redwoods — sits closer at around 30 to 45 minutes and works well as a half-day, leaving your afternoon free back in the city.
ONE THING WORTH KNOWING: a rental car makes both day trips significantly easier, though guided bus tours run to either destination if you’d rather skip the driving.
