Petra: 2-Day Itinerary

Itineraries
Petra: 2-Day ItineraryDAY 1: THE SIQ, THE TREASURY AND THE MAIN STREET

Get in early — right at opening if you can — for cooler temperatures and a quieter run through the Siq and that first Treasury reveal. Continue along the main street past the Royal Tombs and the Roman-influenced theatre. Pace yourself around the heat: rest through the worst of midday and pick back up once the late afternoon cools things down.

DAY 2: THE MONASTERY AND HIGH PLACE OF SACRIFICE

Tackle the 800-step climb to the Monastery in the morning, before peak heat sets in. The reward is a facade even bigger than the Treasury, with dramatically fewer people around to share it with. Got energy left? The High Place of Sacrifice offers another climb and a genuinely different elevated perspective over the whole site.

ONE THING WORTH KNOWING: a two-day Jordan Pass, which covers Petra entry across multiple days alongside other national sites, is usually better value than single-day tickets if you’re planning to actually see the site rather than rush through it. Petra by Night — a candle-lit evening event running several times a week — is a worthwhile add-on if you’ve got a third evening, though it only covers the route to the Treasury rather than the wider site. Petra also pairs naturally with Wadi Rum, about 1.5 hours away, if you want to combine the ancient city with Jordan’s desert landscape on the same trip.
