Thiruvananthapuram, still widely called Trivandrum, is Kerala’s capital and the gateway most Gulf flights and international visitors use to enter the state. Unlike Kochi’s commercial energy or Munnar’s hill-station calm, Trivandrum is a city of contrasts: a working state capital with government buildings and traffic, wrapped around some of Kerala’s most important temples, museums and beaches, with a hill-station escape less than an hour’s drive away.
This guide covers the city and its surrounding region as a hub. Each place below has its own full guide covering history, what to wear, the best time to visit and practical details — follow the links for the complete picture before you go.
PONMUDI
A hill station 61km from the city centre, reached by a 22-hairpin-bend mountain road through dense forest. Genuinely different climate and pace from the coast. Read the full Ponmudi guide for trail conditions, what to wear on the slippery viewpoint rocks, and the best months to visit.
KOVALAM
Kerala’s most internationally known beach town, with three connected coves and a lighthouse that has marked this coastline for over a century. Read the full Kovalam guide for swimming safety by beach, dress expectations, and how the town changes between peak and off season.
NAPIER MUSEUM
A 19th-century museum building that is itself one of the most architecturally distinct structures in Kerala, alongside its collection of bronze idols, ivory carvings and temple chariots. Read the full Napier Museum guide for opening hours, what to expect inside, and why the building’s Indo-Saracenic design is worth understanding before you visit.
PADMANABHASWAMY TEMPLE
One of the richest temples in the world and one of the most strictly regulated in terms of dress and entry. Read the full guide before visiting — the dress code here is enforced, not advisory, and getting it wrong at the gate means you do not get in.
VELI TOURIST VILLAGE
A lagoon-and-sea meeting point on the city’s edge with boating, a floating bridge and a more relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere than the temple and museum sites.
Getting around: Trivandrum International Airport connects directly to the Gulf, making this the natural entry point for most NRI families. The city itself is best navigated by auto-rickshaw or taxi app; Ponmudi and Kovalam both require a dedicated taxi or rented vehicle as they sit outside the city core.
