ItinerariesDAY 1: AMBER FORT
A full morning at Amber Fort, ideally arriving at opening time to avoid both the heat and the tour bus crowds that build by mid-morning. The fort’s scale genuinely rewards several hours rather than a rushed visit — the Sheesh Mahal mirror palace and the various courtyards each merit real time. Afternoon: Jaigarh Fort, directly above Amber and easily combined with it, less visited but offering panoramic views and the world’s largest cannon on wheels.
DAY 2: THE CITY PALACE AND PINK CITY
Morning: the City Palace complex, including the museum sections and, if available, an upgraded ticket granting access to the private royal apartments. Afternoon: Hawa Mahal (best photographed from across the street rather than from inside, where the famous facade is naturally not visible) and a walk through the Pink City’s bazaars, including Johari Bazaar for jewellery and textiles.
DAY 3: JANTAR MANTAR AND BEYOND
Morning: the Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory, ideally with a guide who can explain the function of the various instruments, which are not self-explanatory to an untrained eye despite their visual impressiveness. Afternoon: Nahargarh Fort for sunset, offering the best panoramic view over the entire Pink City as the light softens.
PRACTICAL NOTE: A hired car and driver for the day is the most practical way to cover Amber Fort and Nahargarh Fort, both of which sit outside the convenient walking range of the central Pink City sites.
