Food is one of the easiest ways to understand Switzerland, but the best meals are not always the ones closest to the main attraction.
What to try
Start with local staples, seasonal dishes, market snacks and simple neighbourhood restaurants. Ask what people actually eat on weekdays, not only what is promoted to tourists.
Where to eat
Look slightly away from the busiest sightseeing streets. Restaurants with steady local traffic, short menus and clear pricing are usually safer than places relying only on location.
Local tip
Food timing matters. Some cities eat late, some markets close early, and some dishes are only common at breakfast or lunch. Build meals into the itinerary instead of treating them as an afterthought.
