ItinerariesDAY 1: CORCOVADO AND SANTA TERESA
Morning: Christ the Redeemer via the official cog train through the Tijuca rainforest, ideally early to avoid both crowds and the cloud cover that frequently obscures the summit by midday. Afternoon: Santa Teresa, Rio’s hillside bohemian neighbourhood, with its tram line, art studios and colonial-era architecture, followed by the Selaron Steps in adjoining Lapa.
DAY 2: BEACHES AND SUGARLOAF
Morning: Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the genuine centre of Rio’s daily life. Afternoon: the Sugarloaf Mountain cable car, timed for sunset, offering a different and arguably even more striking panoramic view over the city and bay than Corcovado provides.
DAY 3: HISTORIC CENTRE AND CULTURE
Morning: the historic centre around Praca XV, including the Royal Portuguese Reading Room and the Imperial Palace, tracing the period when Rio served as the seat of the Portuguese Empire. Afternoon: the Museum of Tomorrow on the revitalised waterfront, a striking piece of contemporary architecture and a useful counterpoint to the morning’s colonial history.
PRACTICAL NOTE: Rio’s metro system covers many key areas efficiently and safely; ride-share apps are the practical solution for routes the metro doesn’t cover, and are generally preferred over hailing taxis on the street.
