Reykjavik: 3-Day Itinerary

Itineraries
Reykjavik: 3-Day ItineraryDAY 1: REYKJAVIK CITY

Morning: Hallgrimskirkja church, including the tower viewing platform for a panoramic view over the city’s colourful rooftops. Afternoon: the Harpa concert hall and harbour area, followed by the Sun Voyager sculpture along the waterfront. Evening: the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon geothermal spas, both accessible as an evening excursion from the city, offering a genuinely restorative way to end a day of walking.

DAY 2: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

A full day covering Iceland’s most famous tourist route: Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site sitting directly on the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and the site of Iceland’s original medieval parliament; the Geysir geothermal area, where the Strokkur geyser erupts reliably every few minutes; and Gullfoss, a genuinely powerful two-tiered waterfall on the Hvita river.

DAY 3: SOUTH COAST OR NORTHERN LIGHTS

For visitors travelling outside summer, an evening dedicated to Northern Lights viewing, ideally with a guided tour that can adapt location based on real-time conditions and cloud cover, significantly improves the odds of a genuine sighting over independent attempts. In summer, when the lights are not visible due to near-constant daylight, a day trip along the South Coast toward Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara is the natural alternative.

PRACTICAL NOTE: A rental car offers the most flexibility for both the Golden Circle and South Coast routes, though organised tours are a reasonable and often preferable alternative for winter driving, when road conditions can be genuinely hazardous for visitors unfamiliar with Icelandic winter driving.
