ItinerariesDAY 1: TOWNSITE AND SULPHUR MOUNTAIN
Spend the morning exploring Banff townsite itself, including the Cave and Basin National Historic Site — this is where the original hot springs were found, and where the whole park’s story begins. In the afternoon, take the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain for sweeping views over the peaks and valley below, a genuinely accessible way to gain serious elevation without a demanding hike.
DAY 2: LAKE LOUISE AND MORAINE LAKE
Get up early — and I mean genuinely early. Both lakes’ parking areas fill by mid-morning in peak season, and arriving by 7am isn’t excessive caution, it’s the actual practical advice. Lake Louise gives you that iconic glacier-backed view with lakeside trails; Moraine Lake, less famous but arguably more striking, sits inside the Valley of the Ten Peaks.
DAY 3: ICEFIELDS PARKWAY OR JOHNSTON CANYON
If you’ve got a full day, the Icefields Parkway toward Jasper delivers some of the most dramatic mountain highway scenery anywhere in North America, including the Columbia Icefield. Shorter on time? Johnston Canyon’s waterfall trail is a more accessible half-day hike closer to Banff townsite.
ONE THING WORTH KNOWING: a rental car is genuinely necessary for this itinerary. A shuttle service runs to some of the busier lake routes during peak season, but the flexibility of your own vehicle matters a lot given how time-sensitive that early Lake Louise and Moraine Lake arrival really is.
