HISTORY

Kovalam’s modern tourism story begins in the 1970s, when it became one of the first stops on the original hippie trail through South Asia, drawing backpackers westward from Goa in search of a quieter, less developed coastline. That early counterculture reputation gradually professionalised through the 1980s and 90s as Kerala’s tourism department invested in the area, and Kovalam became the template for what a “Kerala beach destination” meant to international visitors long before Varkala or Marari developed their own followings.

The lighthouse that anchors the southern end of the main beach was built in 1972 on the site of an older light structure, and remains operational — visitors can climb it for a panoramic view that makes clear why this stretch of coast, with its three distinct coves separated by low rocky headlands, was singled out for development over the area’s many other beaches.

WHAT TO WEAR

Kovalam’s main beach (Lighthouse Beach) is genuinely relaxed by Indian beach-town standards — swimwear, including bikinis, is commonly worn without issue, a legacy of the area’s long international tourism history. This is one of the few places in Kerala where this is true without any local pushback.

That said, the moment you step off the sand and into the town itself — the lanes behind the beach, the shops, the temple areas slightly inland — the calculus changes. A light cover-up, sarong or t-shirt over swimwear is the sensible default for walking through the village, both as a courtesy to a community that is still primarily Hindu and traditional outside the immediate tourist strip, and because the sun exposure walking through midday heat is genuinely harsh without it.

For evenings, a Kerala-style light cotton kurta or simple dress works well for the restaurant strip, which has a relaxed, slightly bohemian dress code reflecting the area’s history.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

November to February is peak season for good reason: the sea is calmer, humidity drops noticeably from the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon months, and this is the safest swimming window. The Arabian Sea here has a real undertow risk during the monsoon and the months immediately after (June to September), and lifeguard coverage, while present, should not be assumed to make the water safe during this period regardless of season.

March to May brings intense heat with less sea breeze relief than the cooler months — manageable but noticeably harder than peak season, particularly for visitors not acclimatised to tropical humidity.

PRACTICAL DETAILS

Getting there: 16km from Trivandrum city and roughly 30 minutes from the international airport, making Kovalam a genuinely convenient first or last stop for Gulf flight connections rather than requiring a separate dedicated trip.

What to expect: Three coves — Lighthouse Beach (the main, most developed cove), Hawah Beach, and Samudra Beach — connected by a coastal walking path. Lighthouse Beach has the most restaurants, shops and the lighthouse climb itself; the other two coves are quieter.

Swimming safety: Lifeguards are stationed at Lighthouse Beach during daylight hours in peak season, but coverage thins outside that window. Flagged safe-swimming zones should be respected — several drowning incidents over the years have occurred outside these zones in rip current areas.

Combine with: A half-day Kovalam visit pairs well with Trivandrum city sightseeing on the same day given the short distance; a multi-night stay works as a standalone beach break, particularly for visitors wanting a lower-key alternative to Goa with easier Gulf flight access.
